Washington Black by Esi Edugyan tells the story of an eleven-year-old boy named George Washington Black, known as “Wash,” who is a slave on a Barbados sugar plantation in the 1830s. The novel follows Wash’s journey from slavery to freedom and his adventures across the globe.

The story begins with Wash being chosen to assist his master’s brother, Christopher “Titch” Wilde, a naturalist and inventor. Titch introduces Wash to the world of science and exploration. When a tragic event forces them to flee the plantation, Wash and Titch embark on a journey that takes them from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Nova Scotia (where the author originates or lives), London, Amsterdam, Morocco. And Wash learns, beyond violence, to enjoy science, love, arts, and so on.  Even much more so a coming-to-life, immensely beautiful, etc.

A most remarkable novel.
